Leaves

Red cedar, 96 × 32 × 14 in.

This sculpture was carved under the guidance of my good friend, the Indigenous artist Bill Reid. After seeing me carve a large, yellow cedar public sculpture for the BC Pavilion using an angle grinder, he surprised me with a gift of this old-growth red cedar and a spot in his studio on Granville Island. He was intent on showing me how to carve the “right way”. He taught me how to make and sharpen northwest coast Indigenous carving tools and to use them. This sculpture was the result of our many months together in the studio, laughing and learning, where this sculpture was made and his Haida Canoe sculpture was being developed in its large maquette form.
