About

Ruth Beer is a Vancouver-based artist/researcher whose artistic practice examines and envisions contested geographies and landscapes in transition. Her interdisciplinary artworks include sculpture, video, photography, and tapestry projects.  She has exhibited widely including at such venues Rovaniemi Art Museum, Finland (2024); Burnaby Art Gallery (2024/25); and the Art Gallery at Evergreen, Coquitlam (2024/25). She has created large-scale public sculptures commissioned by municipalities that include the City of Surrey, Richmond and North Vancouver. She has participated in numerous residencies in Canada at the Banff Centre for the Arts and in Japan. Her art practice has been supported by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and BC Arts Council. Her writing has appeared in Imaginations: Journal of Cross-Cultural Image Studies and other publications. As principal investigator, her research creation projects supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Insight Grants include Land, Sea, Sky: Digital Infrastructure in Transition in Northern Landscapes and Communities (2025-2029), and Shifting Ground: Mapping Energy, Geographies and Communities in the North (2019-2025) and Trading Routes: Grease Trails, Oil Pipelines (2012-2019). Ruth is a Professor of Sculpture and Interdisciplinary Practices in the Faculty of Art/Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
