CURRENT
Stainless steel, powder-coated aluminum, 16 × 7 × 15 ft.
Commissioned by City of Burnaby, BC. (2019)
CURRENT is inspired by the movement of water and rivers. It also visually refers to “weaving” with vertical/horizontal elements (of warp and weft) suggesting metaphoric interrelationships and interconnections.
The reflectivity of the sculpture’s materials presents the current light and weather conditions of the moment and of the surrounding site. The repetitive undulating patterns of the circular motifs suggest movement, silver clouds, currents, eddies and flows shaping water into constantly changing spatial rhythms that record and reflect the light. CURRENT’s shimmering, animated light reflective surfaces and patterns are also reminiscent of silver salmon with beautiful iridescent reflective scales, moving together, through water.
CURRENT evokes weaving as the creative, aesthetic and practical process inherent in the fabrication of objects familiar to people of all cultures. It signals an appreciation of shared experiences of basic crafts and handmade artistry.
CURRENT is a highly visible marker at an important crossroad in Burnaby. The artwork is never static. It interactively responds to changing light conditions and surrounding movements resulting in shifting variations of tone, colours, surface patterns and reflectivity of the building façade, and from various viewing angles inviting close examination.
